Music and Speech (typically via podcasts) are big business online. A few mega-corps have sought to own it all, of course, but you have other options.
I read a thing once… that’s vague — was it an article? An interview? Point is, the guy from the band, Tripping Daisy, who later started Polyphonic Spree, said that he noticed a flower growing through the road. That he saw that as a testament to power of life (or something): the asphalt and the tar are such extreme obstacles, yet the flower can grow through them and reach the sunlight.
That is how I perceive widespread corporate ownership of music. Yes, a handful of companies absolutely try to own culture. However, I perceive owning culture like owning wind. You can absolutely trap air, but that is not wind. When companies seek to monetize the sound of yesterday’s rebellion, it’s time for a new sound.
